Everyone’s favorite summer holiday is quickly approaching! Nothing says July 4th like BBQs, pool days, parades, and fireworks! But with the country beginning to emerge from the worst of it, some celebrations are returning in the area. Read on to see what’s happening around Washington, DC this Independence Day and gather up some ideas for your Fourth of July weekend.

Go to a Baseball Game

As the ultimate American pastime, baseball pairs perfectly with Independence Day! And the Washington Nationals just happen to be playing the Los Angeles Dodgers this year at home on July 4th. The mid-day game starts at 11:05 am and you can get seats starting around $40. It’s sure to be a festive day since the promotion during the game is “Patriotic Series: Independence Day”. If you’re craving some fireworks, there’s also a game against the Dodgers Saturday the 3rd at 7:15 pm, which will be followed by Freedom Fireworks, presented by Budweiser.

Visit Mount Vernon

As the nation’s capital, Washington, DC is a great place to spend Independence Day! There are so many important cultural and historical sites in the area that you can visit to celebrate the holiday while keeping with the theme of its roots!

A perfect example is Mount Vernon, the residence of founding father George Washington. You can tour the mansion and estate where George and Martha Washington lived, walk the forest trail, meet the animals living on the farm, visit the museum to learn more about Washington’s life, the Revolutionary War, and the lives of enslaved people kept on the estate, eat regional Virginia food at the Mount Vernon Inn, tour the gristmill and whiskey distillery, and visit the gift shop for Colonial-style home goods, educational toys, historical books, and more.

Due to COVID-19, tours and museums are running with timed-entry tickets.

If you’d like to visit on Independence Day itself, there will be an all-day American Celebration included with admission. While there aren’t many details about it yet, previous years have included colonial foods, Revolutionary War music by live bands, demonstrations, and more. Early birds can also visit between June 25-26 for evenings of fireworks, family fun, and patriotic music.
