Things to Do for Mother’s Day in Atlanta

Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.

Murphy’s

Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and in Atlanta, there’s no better place for brunch than Murphy’s. The food is both upscale and affordable and the setting is cozy with a neighborhood feel. You’ll enjoy comforting classics like quiche lorraine, lox and a bagel, and shrimp and grits plus more modern options like chilaquiles and avocado toast. And if your mom happens to be a wine lover, Murphy’s is known for it!

Piedmont Park

May is the beginning of picnic season! The weather is warming up, trees and flowers are blooming, and outdoor celebrations are a safe option during COVID-19. A great place to take your mom for a picnic locally is Piedmont Park. It’s centrally located and has been Atlanta’s “common ground” since 1904. You can reserve a picnic shelter or the bandstand for a large group here or bring a blanket, fire up one of the grills on-site, and enjoy the views of the skyline.

Atlanta Botanical Garden

A lot of people get their moms flowers for Mother’s Day – but how about taking her to see thousands of blooming flowers? The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a lovely place to spend Mother’s Day with your special someone, and they even have an annual event taking place over the weekend. The Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour on both May 8th and 9th is a ticketed event that goes beyond the confines of the botanical gardens to take you to the most magnificent private gardens in the neighborhood. Read more about the route and how it works here.

The Painted Pin

Is that mom in your life fun-loving and young at heart? The Painted Pin has you covered. This boutique bowling bar is located in a cool warehouse space and has something for everyone. In addition to bowling, you can play bocce ball, shuffleboard, ping pong, skeeball, and more! If you have lots of siblings and want to get a crowd together to celebrate mom, you can even book an event and reserve lanes for your party.

Bacchanalia

If your mom is more of the traditional type, you might want to treat her to a classy night out. Consider Bacchanalia, which has earned a reputation as one of Atlanta’s best restaurants since opening in 1993, including coming in as a James Beard Semifinalist in 2015. You’ll need to make a reservation to dine at this white-tableclothed, farm-to-table spot, but it will be very worth it when you start in on their seasonal, four-course, prix fixe menu.
