Things to Do for the Fourth of July in Baltimore

Everyone’s favorite summer holiday is quickly approaching! Nothing says July 4th like BBQs, pool days, parades, and of course – fireworks! While last year most firework shows and celebrations had to be called off due to the pandemic, this year, some celebrations are able to return (although notably, not the traditional Inner Harbor Fireworks). Read on to see what’s happening around Baltimore this Independence Day and gather up some ideas for your Fourth of July weekend.

Run a Race

Independent Brewing Company is presenting their fifth Annual Asics Independence Day 4 Miler this year on the morning of July 3rd. Sign up for a fun 4-mile run bedecked in your best red, white, and blue garb in nearby Belair, Maryland. The run goes along the Ma & Pa Trail and ends at Independent Brewing Company where you can spend the afternoon “hydrating” post-run. Your first beer is included with race registration!

Patapsco Valley State Park

A laid-back day barbequing with family and friends is one of the best ways to spend the Fourth of July, and if you’re looking for a public park to host a BBQ, check out Patapsco Valley State Park. There are plenty of grassy areas to spread a blanket and even pavilions with picnic tables and grills. With over 16,000 acres of wild nature and developed recreation areas, you’re sure to find fun things for the whole family to do during the day, as well. The park offers hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, and mountain bike trails.

Fireworks

Traditionally, the nearby town of Frederick has a huge bash for July 4th, including entertainment, beer gardens, splash zones, and activities. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, organizers have decided to cancel the event again this summer. However, they will still be having fireworks! The display will take place in a new location where attendees can view the show from the socially distanced safety of their vehicles. Check back here for more details as the date approaches.

Beach Day

Cooling off at the beach is the perfect way to spend a sweltering Fourth of July, and while there are plenty local to Baltimore, if you want to get away from Baltimore, take a day trip over to Ocean City. This fun beachside town has a long boardwalk perfect for strolling and enjoying fries with vinegar, shops, restaurants, amusement rides, and carnival games. And of course, miles and miles of white sand beach along the Atlantic Ocean.

Lunch Cruise

If you’re looking to get out on the water closer to the city, City Cruises by Hornblower offers great lunch cruises, with availability on July 3rd. You’ll spend two hours on the Spirit of Baltimore enjoying lovely views of the city’s historic waterfront from the Inner Harbor and Patapsco River. The cruise includes a buffet lunch of entrees, salads, and dessert plus unlimited coffee, tea, and water. There’s onboard entertainment, as well!

Things to Do for Mother’s Day in Baltimore

Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.

Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen

Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and in Baltimore, there’s no better place for brunch than Gertrude’s, a farm-to-table that celebrates the Chesapeake region’s culinary traditions. Gertrude’s has a phenomenal brunch menu that includes favorites like crab quiche, buttermilk waffles, and a country breakfast platter. Better yet, the restaurant is located in the Baltimore Museum of Art, so you can follow up your meal with a visit to the museum’s renowned art collection.

The National Aquarium

Is that mom in your life fun-loving and young at heart? If so, the National Aquarium is a wonderful way for you to pass the day in awe of the beauty and mysteries of our Earth’s oceans. The aquarium houses 20,000 animals representing 800 different species and is involved in rescue, conservation, and community outreach. It’s a great place to support and you and your mom are sure to learn a lot about all your favorite aquatic creatures.

Piedmont Park

May is the beginning of picnic season! The weather is warming up, trees and flowers are blooming, and outdoor celebrations are a safe option during COVID-19. A great place to take your mom for a picnic locally is Federal Hill Park due to the lovely views of the harbor and Baltimore skyline. This historical spot is just a short walk from downtown, too, so you could easily pair it with something like the National Aquarium!

Rawlings Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

A lot of people get their moms flowers for Mother’s Day – but how about taking her to see thousands of blooming flowers? The Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory is a lovely place to spend Mother’s Day with your special someone. You’ll need to pre-register online ahead of time to secure your timed-entry ticket. Make sure you pay a visit to the Orchid Room, which boasts over 30,000 species!

Woodberry Kitchen

If your mom appreciates fine foods, you might want to treat her to a classy meal. Consider Woodberry Kitchen, owned by Baltimore’s only James Beard award-winning chef, Spike Gjerde. Located in a renovated 1870s mill, and keeping up that rustic chic vibe, the restaurant serves up plant-based farm-to-table fare. Due to COVID-19, you can’t currently eat at the restaurant, but you can order a meal to go and then turn your own dining room into a fine dining establishment for the day – all you’ll need is a white tablecloth, a candle, and a vase of flowers!
