The Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport began with purchasing a piece of land that was, in size, 151 acres. The cost of this land was $53,500.
The airport was first dedicated on November 9th of 1928. Delta Airlines made its first commercial flight that same year. In 1936, the Works Progress Administration and the Civil Conservation Corps invested $62,150 to help improve the airport, which resulted in the construction of a terminal
building and the paving of an apron for aircraft parking.
In 1941, it became the "Jackson Air Base" and was used by the Royal Netherlands Military Flying School. In 1989, the United States Customs Service designated the airport as an International Port of Entry.
