4. Cell Phone Lot: a free waiting area for picking up passengers. The lot is located along Airport Loop Road, and drivers must remain with their vehicles at all times.

The airport is named in honor of a U.S. Navy pilot killed in World War I – Charles McGhee Tyson. It opened on August 1, 1930.
The terminal is designed with a Smoky Mountain theme, including waterfalls and wood carvings of bears. This design pays homage to the airport's proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. (It is only a 30-minute drive to the National Park).
In 2000 significant improvements to the passenger terminal were made, including 12 new gates and two new concourses with restaurants and ticket counters. The upgrades cost $70 million.
