The Stonewall Riots are frequently talked about as being one of the biggest turning points for the LGBT community, and the people who stood up for their rights during this time are seen as some of the greatest activists of their time.
Well, since these riots happened in New York City, celebrating Pride Month in Lenox Hill, New York City, NY, is seen as a privilege and an honor to be able to celebrate in the same city as where it all began.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Back in the 1960’s, it was common for police raids to happen in LGBT bars and clubs, the police were often aggressive, and the raids always ended up with customers arrested or the bars having their money taken. However, when a raid took place at the Stonewall Inn during the early hours of June 28, 1969, the patrons stood their ground and fought back against the police.
This really was a huge turning point in the LGBT history, as when the riots and activist marches died down several weeks later, the community had earned a lot of support from officials and people not in the community. The need for equality and fair treatment was highlighted, and parts of the world started to change one step at a time. Raids on bars stopped, and although there was a long way to go, the events of that night changed many things.
