The holiday season is upon us! That means family time, cozy nights by the fire, baked goods…and scrambling to buy presents! But here’s an idea for you -save some time by grouping your holiday travel and holiday shopping!

If you’re traveling to Jersey City this holiday season, we’ve compiled a few local stores you absolutely must check out for your holiday gift needs. You’ll get to explore a new place, avoid the online shopping shipping wait, and best yet -by shopping small you’ll be supporting the local economy and small business owners!

Kanibal & Co.

Woman-owned Kanibal & Co. may be the boutique to shop in Jersey City. The shop has a small-town mentality and carries products that are “both forward-thinking and rooted in tradition.” Shopping here, you’ll find a range of fun and unique gifts from home goods and apparel to plant growing kits to DIY cooking and baking kits! The store has also collaborated with local designers to create a, “Made in Jersey City” line of products. If you’re shopping for someone crafty, Kanibal & Co. holds monthly craft classes that you could purchase them a spot in.

Love Locked

Looking for a hidden gem? Love Locked has an eclectic selection of jewelry and apothecary items. You can really feel great about giving back to the community, because their offerings include pieces made by 97 different local artists! And better yet, Love Locked’s jewelry selection is all “ethically sourced, conflict-free, and fair trade.” The store has a few items for men too, including rings and grooming oil.

Pholk Beauty

Everyone needs a little self-care, so if you want to pamper the people you’re shopping for, head over to Pholk Beauty. This one is a double whammy when it comes to supporting underrepresented entrepreneurs, because the shop is both woman-owned and Black-owned. The natural skincare products sold here are made with ingredients purchased from folks worldwide affected by the African Diaspora. Everything is made right in Jersey City at The Pholk Beauty Lab, located in the historic Jackson Hill District. Normally, you can stop by the Lab for a pot of green tea and to browse products in their retail lounge, but due to COVID, shopping is currently online-only.

Journal Square

Of course, if your hectic holiday has you hopping off a train or a bus and then rushing straight from Journal Square Transportation Center to a family gathering, you won’t have time to browse through the independent boutiques in downtown Jersey City. But don’t worry, even if you can’t shop small, the Journal Square area has you covered for last minute gifts! There are a ton of options a quick walk from the transportation center, including:

·        If you’re really in a rush, Crescent Gifts is located right inside the transportation center. The store has a nice selection of items, including hats, soaps, and jewelry.

·        There’s an Edible Arrangements located about a 4-minute walk from the station. Who doesn’t like chocolate-dipped fruit?

·        Right across the street from Edible Arrangements is a Dollar Tree, which is always a great spot to stock up on affordable stocking stuffers.
