Celebrating LGBT Pride Month in Chicago, IL

The atmosphere in the city while people are celebrating LGBT Pride Month in Chicago, IL, is electric. Pride Month encompasses the entire month of June, during which events, parades, and other displays are put into place in order to celebrate the LGBT community and draw attention to their cause of having equality and recognition.

Chicago does a great job of celebrating this colorful month with a whole host of activities and functions that anyone can get involved in. We have put together some important information below of where it all began for Chicago, and the top ways it is observed.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

In 1970, only one year after the Stonewall riots took place in New York, Chicago held its first Pride March on the last Saturday of that June. Chicago was one of the first cities after Stonewall to assemble its citizens together in order to kick start the parade, and it is one of the only cities in the country that has never missed a year since, with last year (2019) being the 50th one to be hosted.

Unlike other parts of the country, Chicago and even Illinois as a whole was a little more progressive when it came to the LGBT community, and the pride parades gained a lot more support in a much shorter amount of time compared to other cities. The number of people who attended increased rapidly each year, with the number of attendees hitting the million mark for the last few years.
