Celebrating LGBT Pride Month in Los Angeles, CA, is like nothing else in the world. LA is the birthplace of the Pride March so where better to enjoy all the atmosphere of pride whilst supporting the LGBT community and its message.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
The movement of pride is dated back to June 28, 1969, to a bar in New York City called the Stonewall Inn. Patrons there, tired of facing discrimination, arrests and, extortion from the New York City Police Department decided to take a stand, and in the early hours of that morning riots broke out in the area. The momentum of these actions grew, growing traction through the city and across the world, calling for members and allies of the LGBT community to stand together and look forward to creating an inclusive and equal future.
While the riots and movement began in New York City, the Pride March didn’t begin until a year later in 1970, on the other side of the country in Los Angeles, CA. To celebrate and remember the bravery of the Stonewall rioters, the LGBT community petitioned to have a Pride March through West Hollywood on June 28th. The police department was hesitant to issue a permit, doing so with heavy restrictions until the superior court intervened and the march was allowed to go ahead.
