Valentine’s Day is coming up next month, but roses, chocolate, and Hallmark cards aren’t for everyone. If you’d rather round up your best gal pals and celebrate the joys of female friendship on Galentine’s Day, read on, because we’ve rounded up five fun ways to celebrate with your girls this year in Newark!

Fornos of Spain

If you and your gals want to be fancy, a classic way to spend the evening is dinner and drinks at a renowned restaurant. For one of the most accoladed restaurants in Newark, you’ll want to head to Fornos of Spain, which has both won awards and been proclaimed a “must try” by various national magazines. So, enjoy the night sipping wine, sampling tapas, and laughing with your friends!

Vonda’s Kitchen

If you’re looking for a more laid-back restaurant, support a new venture by dining at Vonda’s Kitchen. This Black woman-owned business is located in the historic neighborhood of Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District. Vonda and her staff serve delicious soul food: you can get breakfast any time of day, or enjoy comfort foods like fried chicken sandwiches and baked macaroni and cheese.

Weequahic Park

If you’re trying to be safe due to COVID-19, an outdoor celebration is the way to go. And even in February, a picnic is a fun way to connect with your gals. Just bring a waterproof tarp for under your picnic blanket, some cozy blankets to snuggle in, and a thermos of hot cocoa! For the best location, have your gal pals meet you at Weequahic Park. This 300+ acre park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers’ firm and boasts the largest lake in the county. After you eat, there are plenty of paths you can stroll around to warm up while taking in the wintry scenery.

North Arlington Bowl

If your friends aren’t content to just sit around and chat, you’re going to want an activity to get everyone moving. How about bowling in nearby North Arlington? Bowling alleys are currently allowed to be open in New Jersey, just know that this one is running and 25% capacity and you’ll need to wear a mask. There are a bar and restaurant inside, and if you so choose, you can book a private event package for your crowd. Better dust off those bowling shoes!

ArteVino Studio

If you want something unique to do, ArteVino Studio in nearby Hoboken is a perfect place for a girls’ night out. You and your friends will get to paint masterpieces while unwinding and catching up. All you have to do is bring whatever you want to snack and sip on (yes, vino is allowed!) and the studio will provide materials and instruction. And, if you’re trying to social distance, they even offer virtual classes! You and your friends can log on from the same or different locations and they’ll ship you the supplies ahead of time.
