Valentine’s Day is coming up next month, but roses, chocolate, and Hallmark cards aren’t for everyone. If you’d rather round up your best gal pals and celebrate the joys of female friendship on Galentine’s Day, read on, because we’ve rounded up five fun ways to celebrate with your girls this year in Portland!
If you and your gals want to be fancy, a classic way to spend the evening is dinner and drinks at a renowned restaurant. For one of the most accoladed restaurants in Portland, you’ll want to head to Nodoguro, a high-end Japanese restaurant serving farm-to-table meals. The restaurant has been written up in many major publications, with many agreeing that it makes the best sushi in the city. You’ll need to make reservations ahead of time -they have a waiting list for dates that are all booked up.
Coava Coffee Roasters
If you’re looking for a more low-key spot to celebrate with your friends, go on a group coffee date to Coava Coffee Roasters. Thrillist named this Portland-based mini-chain one of the best coffee roasters in the country back in 2017 and their cups of joe remain delicious! Fun fact, Portlandia star Fred Armisen likes to drink his coffee there. Make sure you get one of their signature honey and vanilla lattes.
If you’re trying to be safe due to COVID-19, an outdoor celebration is the way to go. And even in February, a picnic is a fun way to connect with your gals. Just bring a waterproof tarp for under your picnic blanket, some cozy blankets to snuggle in, and a thermos of hot cocoa! For the best location, have your gal pals meet you at Peninsula Park. This 16-acre park in the Piedmont neighborhood is a lovely spot to relax. After you eat, you can take a stroll to view the historic bandstand and the 100-year-old fountain.
If your friends aren’t content to just sit around and chat, you’re going to want an activity to get everyone moving. How about empowering each other with a pole dancing lesson? Ecdysiast is a pole dancing studio that’s all about inclusivity, community-mindedness, progressive ideas, and championing a love of movement. While in-person lessons are on pause during the pandemic, you can rent a pole for your house and then have your ladies come over to take a virtual class together.
Bottle & Bottega
If you want something unique to do to celebrate, get in touch with your creative side on a group outing to Bottle & Bottega. This paint and sip studio downtown lets you and your friends create masterpieces while you sip wine and socialize. They’ll provide the materials, instruction, and a wide selection of beer and wine for purchase. You just bring party snacks and get ready to have some fun! You have the option of booking a private party in the studio, or if you’d rather, picking up at-home kits (which come with step-by-step video instruction).
