Valentine’s Day is coming up next month, but roses, chocolate, and Hallmark cards aren’t for everyone. If you’d rather round up your best gal pals and celebrate the joys of female friendship on Galentine’s Day, read on, because we’ve rounded up five fun ways to celebrate with your girls this year near LaGuardia Airport in Queens!
If you and your gals want to be fancy, a classic way to spend the evening is dinner and drinks at a renowned restaurant. For one of the most accoladed restaurants in Queens, you’ll want to head to Mar’s in Astoria. Michelin has given it Bib Gourmand designation, which means it has great food at an affordable price! You’ll enjoy their raw oysters and craft cocktails, perfect for a Galentine’s Party, which are currently available for takeout.
If you’re looking for a more mom-and-pop type restaurant, Lucali is the place to go. This neighborhood joint is cash-only and BYOB, but they serve some of the best thin crust pizza around! Ok, yes, it is located in Brooklyn about a 30-minute drive from LaGuardia, but after all, Brooklyn and Queens are on the same island. And with both Beyoncé and JAY-Z recommending it (JAY-Z says it’s “by far” the best pizza in Brooklyn), you really can’t go wrong.
If you’re trying to be safe due to COVID-19, an outdoor celebration is the way to go. And even in February, a picnic is a fun way to connect with your gals. Just bring a waterproof tarp for under your picnic blanket, some cozy blankets to snuggle in, and a thermos of hot cocoa! For the best location, have your gal pals meet at Crocheron Park. The park is a lovely spot to relax and after you eat, you can take a stroll on one of the many trails that go through the park or along the bay.
World Ice Arena
If your friends aren’t content to just sit around and chat, you’re going to want an activity to get everyone moving. Why not embrace the wintry mood of February and take a group ice skating trip? A visit to World Ice Arena is a fun way to celebrate with your friends. This indoor rink is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and has general skating hours Friday through Sunday. Admission is $10 per person. Skate rentals are not available.
Brooklyn Craft Company
If you want a unique way to celebrate Galentine’s Day, help everyone get in touch with their creative side with a crafting workshop! One borough over at Brooklyn Craft Company, you can have a private party where they will create a custom DIY experience for you and your friends. They’ll provide all materials and instruction needed and handle set up and clean up! Another option, if you’d rather not go out in public due to the pandemic, is to have your friends over and stream in a virtual workshop. They have all different crafts to choose from and you can purchase a corresponding “supply bundle” ahead of time.
