Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.
Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and near LaGuardia Airport, there’s no better place for brunch than Sanfords Astoria. Known for serving New American comfort food, Sanfords Restaurant brunch wouldn’t be complete without a selection from their extensive wine and beer menus.
May is the beginning of picnic season! The weather is warming up, trees and flowers are blooming, and outdoor celebrations are a safe option during COVID-19. A great place to take your mom for a picnic locally is Crocheron Park. The park is a lovely spot to relax and after you eat, you can take a stroll on one of the many trails that go through the park or along the bay.
Brooklyn Craft Company
If you want something unique to do with your mom, how about getting in touch with your creative side with a crafting workshop? One borough over at Brooklyn Craft Company, you can have a private party where they will create a custom DIY experience for you, your mom, and her friends. They’ll provide all materials and instruction needed and handle set up and clean up! Another option, if you’d rather not go out in public due to the pandemic, is to have mom over to your apartment and stream in a virtual workshop. They have all different crafts to choose from and you can purchase a corresponding “supply bundle” ahead of time.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
A lot of people get their mom flowers for Mother’s Day – but how about taking her to see thousands of blooming flowers? The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a lovely place to spend Mother’s Day with your special someone. Mother’s Day falls during their Art in the Garden: Spring Weekends series, which means that as you wander the gardens and view the blooms, you can enjoy performances by the Brownstone Jazz Ensemble, Japanese dancers Sachiyo Ito and Company, and trumpeter Frank London. Make a day of it with a stop in the garden store and café, or pop over to The Brooklyn Museum right next door afterward! Advance tickets are required due to the pandemic.
If your mom is more of the traditional type, you might want to treat her to a night out at a renowned restaurant. Consider Mar’s in Astoria for one of the most accoladed restaurants in Queens. Michelin has given it Bib Gourmand designation, which means it has great food at an affordable price! You’ll enjoy their raw oysters and craft cocktails, perfect for a relaxed night with mom.
