The holiday season is upon us! That means family time, cozy nights by the fire, baked goods…and scrambling to buy presents! But here’s an idea for you -save some time by grouping your holiday travel and holiday shopping!

If you’re traveling to Sacramento this holiday season, we’ve compiled a few local stores you absolutely must check out for your holiday gift needs. You’ll get to explore a new place, avoid the online shopping shipping wait, and best yet -by shopping small you’ll be supporting the local economy and small business owners!

Capital Books

Capital Books is a new independent bookstore in Downtown Sacramento owned by a married couple. Check out their book gift guide online, look into their curated book bundle service, or stop in to browse the selection. Capital Books is also a great place to get shopping done for kids and teens -in addition to books, they sell games, puzzles, Pokémon cards, and Magic the Gathering cards. The store is currently offering free delivery to within a 4-mile radius.

Mixed Bag

Located in Midtown, Mixed Bag has been an independently-owned gift shop since 1981. It currently has new owners, but the same great products they’ve always carried. Shop for gifts there and you can browse categories like cards, candles, home goods, personal care, baby, and toys.

Garden of Enchantment

Take a stroll down the historic Old Sacramento Waterfront, where you’ll find a gift shop called Garden of Enchantment. This is a perfect spot to shop for lovers of fantasy, Eastern religions, or New Age movements. The store has incense, candles, unique music, statuary (like fairies, dragons, Egyptian motifs, and the Buddha). You’ll also find a huge selection of hand-crafted jewelry at affordable prices.

Sacramento Zoo

The pandemic has hit zoos pretty hard. Force to close down for long periods of time during the lockdown, zoos of course had to continue to take great care of their animals. But the Sacramento Zoo is currently back open and you can support them by gifting a membership (perfect for families with kids!) or shopping in their gift shop. The Zoofari Market near the zoo’s entrance is jam-packed with animal-themed toys and educational books for kids, as well as apparel and home goods for adults. Your dollars will help support the zoo’s mission of conservation and help to care for the rare animals housed there.

Sacramento International Airport

Of course, if your hectic holiday has you rushing straight from the plane to a family gathering, you won’t have time to browse through the boutiques in downtown Sacramento. Don’t worry, you may be able to find something at the Sacramento Airport! There are a few boutiques and gift shops inside, but please note hours of operation may be affected by COVID-19.

·        Baggallini in Terminal A was founded be two flight attendants and carries handbags, cosmetic cases, luggage, and more.

·        Erwin Pearl in Terminal A carries fashion jewelry as a good option for stocking stuffers.

·        DOCO Market in Terminal B carries goods with a “Sacramento vibe,” from local honey to T-shirts.
