The holiday season is upon us! That means family time, cozy nights by the fire, baked goods…and scrambling to buy presents! But here’s an idea for you -save some time by grouping your holiday travel and holiday shopping!
If you’re traveling to Washington DC this holiday season, we’ve compiled a few local stores you absolutely must check out for your holiday gift needs. You’ll get to explore a new place, avoid the online shopping shipping wait, and best yet -by shopping small you’ll be supporting the local economy and small business owners!
This Black woman-owned boutique is bursting with fun and personality! Owner Tyler hand-draws and letters her “sassy, sarcastic” greeting cards on quality paper and embraces a DIY, crafted vibe for the gift items she carries. In addition to the normal array of gift items (tote bags, stickers, prints, and more), Siyo Boutique currently has a holiday section with greeting cards, wrapping paper, gift tags, and even festive earrings. Overall, the products you’ll find here are colorful, upbeat, youthful, and feminist.
Another Black-owned business you can support while getting awesome gifts is Nubian Hueman. Their motto is “celebrate – create – curate” which they fulfill by carrying products that are inspired by Black and Brown culture and the African Diaspora. You’re bound to find something for everyone on your list among their selection of fair-trade goods, fashion, and art. Nubian Hueman is located inside the Anacostia Arts Center and is offering curbside pick-up.
Urban Dwell carries “elements for home & self,” which translates to a whole lot of gift options. This is a great place to start if you’re shopping for kids, because they have children’s books, boardgames, puzzles, and craft kits. They have plenty for adults, too, from soaps and lotions to candles to gardening sets. Urban Dwell is offering curbside pick-up.
Salt and Sundry
Woman-owned Salt and Sundry is a “home + lifestyle boutique” with locations in both Union Market and Logan Circle. You’ll find all kinds of gifts among their eclectic assortment of tableware, home furnishings, accessories, self-care, books & games, and more. Also be sure to check out their sister shop in Logan Circle, Little Leaf, for potted plants, adorable planters, and other gifts for the “plant people” in your life.
Washington DC Area Airports
Of course, if your hectic holiday has you rushing straight from the plane to a family gathering, you won’t have time to browse through the boutiques in downtown Washington DC. Don’t worry, the Washington Dulles International Airport can help! Here are a few places inside where you may be able to find last-minute gifts:
· Dulles International Airport has shops like America! For patriotic-themed gifts, and Vineyard Vines for trendy apparel with a Martha’s Vineyard vibe.
