The holiday season is upon us! That means family time, cozy nights by the fire, baked goods…and scrambling to buy presents! But here’s an idea for you -save some time by grouping your holiday travel and holiday shopping!
If you’re traveling to Birmingham this holiday season, we’ve compiled a few local stores you absolutely must check out for your holiday gift needs. You’ll get to explore a new place, avoid the online shopping shipping wait, and best yet -by shopping small you’ll be supporting the local economy and small business owners!
LeNell’s Beverage Boutique
Want to really make the spirits bright this holiday season? Head downtown to LeNell’s Beverage Boutique to browse their selection of small-production wines, keepsake bourbons, and even organic liquors. Owner LeNell Camacho Santa Ana has been nicknamed The First Lady of Liquor and she runs a fun and quirky shop. Better yet, LeNell’s hosts cognac tastings as fundraisers for TAKE Resource Center, a local charity that helps trans women of color.
This historical industrial building in Birmingham is now a bustling marketplace. Formerly a syrup plant for Dr. Pepper, Pepper Place is full of small businesses that have you covered for your holiday shopping needs. One highlight is Yellowhammer Print Studios, which was started in 2009 by two designers. To get even more of a local shopping fix, come on a Saturday when Pepper Place holds a farmer’s market every Saturday, where you can find local foods and hand-made crafts.
Stone Hollow Farmstead
Natural, sustainable, and local products are always a good gift-giving idea, and at Stone Hollow Farmstead you can find cheeses, honey, specialty foods, botanicals, and cosmetics for that special someone on your list. They even put together holiday gift boxes and are working on a line of CBD infused personal care products. You can also keep the good food coming for your gift recipient with a CSA box subscription! Owned by a mother and daughter team and run by them and their families, you can buy products online, at their farm stand at Pepper Place, or make the trip 30 miles out to the farmstead, located on Highway 280. If you have the extra time, it’s worth the trip out to the farm to see their goats and beehives!
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport
Of course, if your hectic holiday has you rushing straight from the plane to a family gathering, you won’t have time to browse through the boutiques in downtown Birmingham. Don’t worry, you may be able to find a little something at the Birmingham Airport! Many of its retail shops are currently closed due to COVID-19, but there are still a couple of gift shops open for business:
· Ebony Newsstand in Concourse C specializes in Ebony magazine merchandise, as well as offering some assorted gifts and travel related items.
· Benefit Glam Up and Away, also located in Concourse C, has makeup and beauty products that would make great stocking stuffers!
