If you’re looking for your next great family adventure, or someplace different to take the kids, we have you covered. Spending a day out with the kids is a great way to recapture your own childlike curiosity and love of play, so we’ve included plenty of options that will make the adults as happy as the kids. Below are some of the best, most unique, and most beloved things to do with your kids in New York City.
Have your kids ever wanted to be a spy like James Bond? At Spyscape, a museum for all things spy-related, the whole family can test their covert skills at the exhibit “007xSPYSCAPE” (a new immersive James Bond experience). Or you can work with “British Intelligence” and receive a briefing of your mission, crack codes, attempt to stay undercover, and even go on a special ops mission (winding your way past lasers of course). Before or after this interactive exhibit, you can stroll through all the fun gadgets of spycraft and even purchase them at the spy shop.
Coney Island is a legendary New York City destination. Since its beginning, the boardwalk has been the playground for New York City residents (often for those heading to the beach to escape the heat of summer in the city). Today it is still a great place to visit with kids. There are carnival rides and games of every kind imaginable. The Boardwalk and Luna Park offer old-style amusement that is definitely still a blast today. Be sure to enjoy any and all of the delicious food as well (especially Nathan’s Hot Dogs – a Coney Island staple).
Central Park Swedish Cottage
On 79th St Transverse of Central Park (across from the American Museum of Natural History) is the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. It is a small, wooden building that was originally transported to the United States in 1876 and was used as Sweden’s exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Today it is a charming building nestled among the greenery of Central Park that has regular marionette performances. Kids and their parents have been enjoying these shows for decades; they are nothing short of magical.
Queens County Farm Museum
One of the most magical things about Queens County Farm Museum is that it is a farm in New York City. This is a great place to take the kids if you’re looking to “get out of the city” without actually having to travel too far. The 47-acre farm offers tours of its sustainable lands and Colonial-era farmhouse as well as Discovery Days for the kids, a maze, hayrides, and special classes.
Bronx Zoo Tree Top Adventure
Outdoor, obstacle course adventuring at its finest! Bronx Zoo Tree Top Adventure offers ziplines and obstacle courses through the trees.
