Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.
Hub and Spoke Diner
Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and in Salt Lake City, there’s no better place for brunch than Hub and Spoke Diner. This restaurant serves modern American food comprised of creative spins on classic diner fare and has a very extensive weekend brunch menu.
Memory Grove Park
May is the beginning of picnic season! The weather is warming up, trees and flowers are blooming, and outdoor celebrations are a safe option during COVID-19. A great place to take your mom for a picnic locally is Memory Grove Park, adjacent to the Utah Capitol Building. This serene and lovely park has a classic look, featuring fountains, monuments, and paths through gardens. And for a nice dose of nature, it has views of the mountains and a creek running through it.
The Paint Mixer
If you want something unique to do with your mom, how about getting in touch with your creative side? At The Paint Mixer, you can paint masterpieces while sipping adult beverages. The staff there will give you step-by-step instructions to guide you while you paint and play music to help you free your mind and feel comfortable creating. All you have to do is BYOB; they’ll provide the space and painting supplies. They specialize in private parties, so your Mother’s Day event will be in good hands!
Red Butte Garden
A lot of people get their mom flowers for Mother’s Day – but how about taking her to see thousands of blooming flowers? Red Butte Garden, the state botanical garden of Utah, is a lovely place to spend Mother’s Day with your special someone. The garden is huge and you could very easily spend the entire day here, learning about the plants that make up this “living plant museum”, enjoying the many acres of developed gardens, or even exploring the 5 miles of hiking trails that wind through the foothills.
If your mom is more of the traditional type, you might want to treat her to a classy night out. Consider Handle, or HSL, one of the most accoladed restaurants in Salt Lake City. This upscale eatery is chic and contemporary, serving locally sourced American small plates and craft cocktails. Owner and Executive Chef, Briar Handly, was nominated for the Best Chef: Mountain James Beard award this past year! Moreover, the restaurant has been written up by Condé Nast Traveler, Bon Appétit, Forbes Travel Guide, The New York Times, and more. See what they’re saying about the food for yourself!
