Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.

Friedman’s

Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and near Hudson Yards, there’s no better place for brunch than Friedman’s in Hell’s Kitchen. They serve brunch all day and have a lovely selection of drinks, from fancy coffees to fresh-squeezed juices to cocktails to rosé and bubbly. This is also a great place to go if you have dietary constraints, as much of their menu is gluten-free!

Tea & Sympathy

If you and your mom like feeling fancy, you should enjoy an elegant, English-style afternoon tea. One of the best places nearby to enjoy high tea is Tea & Sympathy. Their floral décor is the epitome of the trendy cottage core aesthetic and is the perfect backdrop for Mother’s Day. Afternoon tea includes assorted finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes, and a hot pot of tea. There are also lots of British favorites on the menu if you need something a bit more substantial, like shepherd’s pie, pasties, and sausage rolls. Tea & Sympathy is an NYC fixture that’s been struggling to hold on through the pandemic, so your support will really help.

The Highline

If you’re trying to be safe due to COVID-19, an outdoor celebration is the way to go. How about taking a stroll along The Highline? This unique outdoor park near Hudson Yards covered in native flora is just coming into bloom! You’ll also be treated to wonderful views of the Hudson River and get to enjoy lots of fun sculptures and murals along the path. The park used to be an above-ground train line, but now it’s an elevated walking path stretching just under 1.5 miles. There are benches dotted along it too, so you can bring coffee and snacks for a little picnic!

Liquid Lab

If you can’t get together with your mom in person but still want to celebrate together, take a virtual mixology class through Liquid Lab! This company is taking the art of cocktail making and putting a contemporary spin on it. On May 9th, they’re offering a special Mother’s Day Class over Zoom where you’ll learn to make themed cocktails and play some cocktail trivia.

Laut

If your mom is more of the traditional type, you might want to treat her to a night out at a renowned restaurant. Consider heading to Laut. While it may not be an extremely expensive or frilly place to eat, it does have the honor of having a Michelin Star, as well as being featured in Time Out New York, The New York Times, and more. You and your mom will love their delicious South Asian flavors and colorful menu items!
