Summertime around Hudson Yards can be difficult to plan for, whether having to pick out options for a limited amount of time or making worthwhile additions to a schedule that fills out the summer. In any case, with the wealth of options nearby, allow us to introduce some of our favourite ways to spend the summer, in and around Hudson Yards.
One of the more striking visual features on your arrival to Hudson Yards will no doubt be The Shed, a centre of arts, expression and community here in Hudson Yards. Distinguished by its retractable shell, The Shed is one of Hudson Yards’ leading venues for exhibitions and performances, opened recently in April 2019. Some of the notable events that have already come to The Shed include a concert by Steve McQueen, performances by Anne Carson and Bjork, and the premiere of Michael Bay’s 6 ‘ Underground ‘. Whether it is to witness a great talent, be inspired and prompted on deeper questions or just to enjoy the arts, The Shed is and will continue to be a hub for all of these interests.
Offering a stunning view over New York, Edge is an outdoor sky deck overlooking the Big Apple. In fact, at 100 storeys high, it is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Americas! Hours of operation are from 8a to midnight daily, meaning viewing the city during morning, day, sunset or night is all possible. Aside from its minimalistic and modern design, Edge also has additional viewing locations, such as a glass floor looking directly down for the daring, and corners of the sky deck providing a surreal backdrop for photography.
A recently established custom is the pleasant Jazz @ Pier 84 series, a charming series of Jazz concerts featuring vocalists and instrumentalists at Hudson River Park, right on the Hudson! Enjoy the outdoor sun and view of the Hudson as you listen to Jazz Classics by some seriously talented musicians. Some of the big names that have performed at Pier 84 include George Braith, Art Baron, Whitney Marchelle and Gregory Lewis Organ Monk Trio. Come spend your days with the Hudson Yards community under the New York summer sun in one of the most relaxing experiences by the Hudson.
Indeed, Hudson River Park has a true commitment to music, the arts and the community by the river. Sunset on the Hudson is another summertime tradition of the Hudson River Park, with big artists performing for gatherings on benches and towels. Some of the lineups in recent years might be of surprise, but that testifies to the diversity and wide range of genres live at the Park. These names that have performed at Sunset on the Hudson include Zach Comtois, Manhattan Samba, the High and Mighty Brass Band, Koku Gonza, Resistance Revival Chorus and Coco & Breezy. For a sunset of music spent with friends, family or as a couple’s night out, come to Sunset on the Hudson.
