Mother’s Day is coming up next month! The moms in our lives work so hard and give so much, so it’s important to take a day to make them feel special. Whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a step-mother, the mother of your children, or a friend who is a mom, here are some ideas of wonderful things to do with her.

Big Bad Breakfast

Since Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, it’s traditional for many people to take their mom out for brunch. This is always a winning idea, and in Birmingham, there’s no better place for brunch than Big Bad Breakfast. The restaurant is the brainchild of James Beard award-winning chef John Currence and takes pride in serving up classic Southern breakfast staples. You can get all kinds of delicious brunch food like chicken biscuits, shrimp and grits, huevos rancheros, French toast, omelets, salads, and more. And don’t forget a beverage! They make wonderful cocktails like Bloody Marys from scratch, mimosas with fresh-squeezed juice, and Irish Coffee that follows the original recipe.

Morgan Creek Vineyards

It’s a common trope that moms like wine – but really, who doesn’t like wine? For a lovely day, take a trip about 45 minutes outside town to Morgan Creek Vineyards. The beautiful property is the perfect place to spend quality time while sipping one of their many varieties of wine. Enjoy some snacks while you wine taste, shop local products like jam at their on-site store, or take in the gorgeous scenery while walking along the wine trail. You can also learn all about how wine is made in their bottling room! And of course, don’t forget to take a few bottles home with you when you leave.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

A lot of people get their moms flowers for Mother’s Day – but how about taking her to see thousands of blooming flowers? The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a lovely place to spend Mother’s Day with your special someone, and better yet, both admission and parking are free! There are over 67 acres of plants to explore on your own or as part of a tour, as well as an art gallery, library, café, and gift shop. Pro tip: bring a picnic blanket, pack some treats, and enjoy the lovely Spring weather!

Highlands Bar and Grill

If your mom is more of the traditional type, you might want to treat her to a classy night out. Consider Highlands Bar and Grill, one of Birmingham’s best restaurants known for using class French cooking techniques. The restaurant’s menu is constantly changing to best feature local, seasonal produce, and meat. And their food has been recognized -in 2018, they won the James Beard Award for the most outstanding restaurant in America and their pastry chef, Dolester Miles, won the award for outstanding pastry chef. While the restaurant has been shuttered for a while due to the pandemic, they’re back this Spring or indoor dining.
