Houston. This Texan giant exemplifies the state’s reputation in all of its endeavors and activities, from manufacturing to sport, energy, healthcare, music, and aeronautics. Indeed, the saying ‘everything is bigger in Texas’ also applies to its events, and there are plenty here year-round! So for the visitor, returnee, and locals alike, read on for some of our favorite ways to spend the holidays here around space city.

Dasher’s Lightshow

Formerly known to the Houston area as ‘Rudolph’s Lightshow’ the name has changed, but the breathtaking light show hasn’t. This accessible and comfy attraction is enjoyed from the comfort of your vehicle, meaning you can stay in your pj’s under a blanket with your favorite snacks, while touring some acres of holiday spirit and music. This is a great option for those winter days where you don’t want to leave home but still want to enjoy the holidays. Stay comfy and stay cozy at Dasher’s Lightshow, one of the Houston area’s longest-lived holiday season traditions.

Zoo Lights

Celebrate the holidays with some of Houston’s most interesting residents, the famous faces of the Houston Zoo! Along the Houston Zoo’s fifteen miles of footpaths, gardens and carefully crafted ambiance is a light show with few rivals in the space city region. This is a great way to see what the eccentric animals of the Houston Zoo get up to during the holidays and after hours, as well as enjoy a pleasant stroll through this Houston tradition. Grab your gloves and a cup of hot chocolate, and tour the Zoo Lights while you’re in the Houston area for the holidays! (We recommend checking out the giant ice throne that Santa sits upon, as one of the more memorable sights on the tour.)

Home for the Holidays at Old Town Spring

For over forty years and counting, Home for the Holidays at Old Town Spring has been a great family option for the holidays! Enjoy the cozy Christmas village feel and variety of fun activities and shows here at Old Town Spring. These include a grand Christmas tree, holiday lights, horse-drawn wagon rides, community, and professional music and dance performances throughout the streets and on stage, a number of shopping options for souvenirs and dining, and of course, caroling. This is a great, slow-paced holiday season option for all travelers, where visitors can get holiday shopping done, take postcard photos, and enjoy a number of memorable classic holiday season activities.

Gingerbread Village

Enjoy this (literally) sweet holiday season spectacle, the Gingerbread Village! Carolers, hot chocolate, sculptures and lights, and giant candies decorate the scene, a must-catch experience for families and all travelers with a sweet tooth. With the proximity to the CityPlace shopping center, this is a great addition to itineraries along with any holiday season shopping sprees as a wind-down activity, choice photo opportunity, or regrouping point. Round up the whole party at the Gingerbread Village and stop by one of Houston’s jolliest holiday season events!
