WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
It wasn’t until 1978, nine years after the Stonewall Riots in New York City, that Jacksonville held its first Pride Parade. Like so many other cities across the country, the turnout and support were small, and it was difficult to gain enough recognition to make it a larger event.
The problems continued over the years, with a lack of funding and resources, and board members leaving to pursue other ventures, and the parade and other events were largely hit and miss for decades. Finally, in 2010, things took a turn for the better when fundraising was organized by the LGBT community to pay for the Pride Parade to be an annual occurrence.
Since then, the Pride Parade and Festival has been celebrated in October to coexist with National Coming Out Day, although there is still an abundance of activities that take place throughout June as well.
