Date night doesn’t have to be the same each time. While we all love cuddling up at the movies or trying new restaurants or embracing a bit of high culture at museums, every once in a while, date night needs to be shaken up. Each city has a hidden world of strange, quirky, and delightful things to do. Try any one of these on your next date night and embrace the weird, whimsical part of life.
The New Parish
The New Parish is an intimate, live music venue with an outdoor patio. Many concerts and performances are held here year-round, but one of the most intriguing is the “Mortified Storytelling Series”, held monthly in Oakland. In this series, adults share hilarious, embarrassing moments from their lives by also sharing their most mortifying childhood artifacts (home movies, poems, diaries, etc). It is a performance that will have you experiencing second-hand embarrassment just as often as it will send you into riotous laughter, but it makes for a wonderfully different night out as a couple.
The Odditorium is a Bay Area based aerial circus company and school. You and your date can stop by for one of their uninhibited, death-defying performances or take a chance and “run away to the circus” by signing up for a class. SkyHigh Odditorium offers group and private classes to learn aerial stunts. Or you can sign up to become a Fire Eater. SkyHigh Odditorium is home to a variety of classes and performances that will shake up any date night.
A strange, beautiful place that is, all at once, many different things. The Labyrinth is a piece of history, an art installation, and a stunning nature walk. Among the hills of the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve lies an old quarry, at the bottom of which is the Mazzariello Labyrinth. It is not a labyrinth that can be compared to a maze with every path ahead obscured by high walls. Instead, Mazzariello Labyrinth offers a peaceful hike, and a strange, meditative walk winding through the volcanic rocks and small plants that outline the Labyrinth. You may even find special trinkets that other visitors have left behind.
Heinold’s First & Last Chance Saloon
When looking for a date night outside the norm, the opportunity to travel back in time is always welcome. In Heinold’s First & Last Chance Saloon, you and your date will step into the Old West. What began, in 1884, as a watering hole for locals and sailors is now a local landmark and time capsule. The exterior of the saloon is the same as it was in 1884, while the interior will surround you with memorabilia from Prohibition, the Old West, WWI, and more.
Monster Truck Rally
Looking for something to get your adrenaline going? Maybe go someplace you’ve never been? Head to the RingCentral Coliseum of the Oakland Arena for “Monster Jam” – a heart-stopping, larger-than-life monster truck show. Drivers perform stunts in cars named “Gravedigger”, “Medusa”, and “Wolverine”. After the opening stunts, stick around as they all battle it out. You both will have a blast cheering as loudly as you can and embracing the mayhem in the atmosphere.
