When the weather cooperates, we all love to get outside and explore the world around us. There is nothing more refreshing and soothing to the soul than a picnic in the sun, surrounded by the beauty of nature. Every city in the United States has incredible locations for picnicking. Below are 5 Great Places to Picnic near Hudson Yards in New York City.
The High Line
In a city filled with famous parks and famous sites, The High Line is a relatively new one, but is hands-down one of the most unique. This 1.45-mile park was built on an old subway rail line. It lives 30 feet above the street, making it a special oasis in the sky. Much of the park follows a boardwalk with trees and small gardens on each side of the walkway. These parts of the park can be crowded but scattered throughout the 1.45-miles are pockets of seating areas, tree covered benches, and alcoves with glass railings that look out over the city and the Hudson River.
Chelsea Waterside Park
A special children’s play area with water features, a colorful tunnel that looks like a long fish, plenty of shade from trees or canopies, and grassy lawns for picnicking. Chelsea Waterside Park also boasts wonderful views of the Hudson River and is an absolute blast for children and the whole family.
Pier 63 at Hudson River Park
Head West from Chelsea Waterside Park and cross 11th Avenue and you’ll be in the middle of Pier 63, part of the larger Hudson River Park. The former pier has been renovated with gardens and grassy lawns. A skate park and tennis courts have also been added for recreational fun. There are several quality picnic tables with umbrellas throughout the gardens. My favorite place to picnic, however, is on the benches overlooking the Hudson River. You can watch boats as they come in and enjoy the sounds of waves. Pier 63 is also a great picnic location because of its proximity to Chelsea Piers, a large multi-sport complex covering several piers South of the park.
Bella Abzug Park
Bella Abzug is a unique, paved urban park with sculptures, fountains, and a kids’ play area. It is directly below The Vessel, a popular, one-of-a-kind architectural structure that visitors can climb to the top of for wonderful views of the city. Bella Abzug Park itself is great for relaxed picnicking within the hustle and bustle of NYC. Adults can enjoy the tables or benches, taking an opportunity to read over lunch, or to feed the birds that gather in the park.
14th Street Park
Near the Hudson River, below the High Line, is this small oasis in the city. There are no fancy architectural features, fountains, or play areas, but there is plenty of greenery, open lawn, or tables and chairs for a quiet afternoon picnic. 14th Street Park is frequented by locals who work in the area and is a great place to find some sun and nature in the middle of the urban jungle. This is our favorite place to picnic with a group of friends, chatting the afternoon away with the breeze from the Hudson River coming our way. Yoga lessons are often taught on the lawn as well and make for great exercise before a picnic.
